So I'm in LA on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend for jut a few hours, not even a full day. Looking up places to try near downtown or Chinatown and Philippe the Original pops up on my radar. I am taking a train into Union Station and Philippe's is only a 5 minute walk, plus they are open for breakfast, so I have to try it. This didn't occur to me until I was writing this review, but I haven't had a French dip in over 25+ years, they just don't appeal to me for some reason. I guess I just got caught up in the hype. So glad I did try it. At 10AM on a Sunday morning there were only about 7-10 people in front of me, so really no wait. I order the beef dip, double dip with cheddar. I ask the lady which side was the best and she recommended coleslaw or potato salad. I selected the latter. For seating you just grab a seat at one of the long tables or take a booth. I sit down and try the potato salad and I'm just not impressed. It's really kinda bland. I take a bite of the beef dip without the au jus and it is wonderful. The beef is so tender and flavorful, the French roll perfect and it holds up well when dipped in the au jus. I reach for the mustard that I have heard so much about and see the salt and pepper shakers so I do something that I never do which is add S&P to the potato salad and suddenly it is transformed. It is sooo good I can't believe it. Just a little S&P takes it from a 4 to a 9. Then I do one more thing which is transformative, I add some mustard to the beef dip. I had read about how good the mustard was as well as spicy so I was expecting good things but it was better than I expected. I love spicy food but this was spicy, you only need a little bit cause it goes a long way. I read an article or review where someone asked the owner why they didn't sell their mustard and the owner replied with they don't use any preservatives so it wouldn't have a long shelf life. Another thing they answered was the mustard has no horseradish in it it is just in the same family so it tastes similar. Anyways that mustard is fire. Later that evening I'm headed back to Union Station and it's close to 9:30PM so I go back to Philippe's. This time I try the lamb dip with of course the potato salad. Once again an awesome sandwich ranked just under the beef dip. I will be back again when I am in LA to try the pastrami, the chili, a slice of cake or pie and to buy some mustard to take home. It wasn't until I was back home and I looked at my photos when I realized that they now sell their mustard.

Came on Saturday during MDW (around 12PM) and waited approximately 25 minutes Definitely did not disappoint. Definitely an old school feel when you walk in. You know a place is good when the people seated at the tables are real quiet. Make sure you try the hot mustard (mustard + horseradish) with the sandwiches but don't add too much because it will make you cry (yes, I cried). Got the beef dip and pork dip (double dipped) with a side of potato salad and coleslaw. Double dipped beef dip: juicy, flavorful and definitely lives up to its fame Double dipped pork dip: fatty, light but definitely not as flavorful as the beef dip Coleslaw and Potato Salad: refreshing and very unique flavors. Definitely a nice palate cleanser Iced Tea: comes unsweetened Lemonade: good

This place is iconic and every time I am in town I try to stop by if I can make it. If you haven't been here, you need to check it out at least once in your life as it is historic to the city and French dips in general. I was traveling from Nevada and was taking a train from Union Station to Santa Clarita. This is only a 10 minute walk from the station once you get inside there is generally a line that'll take you about 20 minutes to get through when you're close to feeding time. The staff is always very knowledgeable and the menus are easy to read with obvious options. I got pastrami dip, dip, and two Diet Coke because that will cancel out all the calories. The flavor was delicious and I enjoyed the sandwiches. The only drawback is the cost of the quantity that you receive. I will definitely return and always for everyone to try.

The Lamb, Double Dip, Double Meat = The best. Coleslaw 3 Iced Tea & Lemonade. My goto meal. Put plenty of hot mustard on the sandwich and pour black pepper to cover Coleslaw like a thin blanket (1/4 of a shacker). Be sure to drink the Slaw/Pepper juice from the plate. It's so good. Mt last visit, pleasantly surprised. Plastic is accepted now. I needed to take an extra half-hour at lunch to get enough cash at the bank when taking the crew to lunch. Once, a bank teller asked if I wanted an escort because I was getting so much cash. Im kidding, maybe.

One of the best sandwich meals around is Philippe's dip Sandwiches. I polished off the lamb dip (I get the dip in the side versus having them dip it). Delicious. The sandwich is packed with meat. Their sauce on the tables is fire! It's quick and great. When I go to my next Dodger's game I'm taking a sandwich in!

A must try on a visit to LA, this Phillipes location has been around since before Marilyn Monroe was singing Happy Birthday Mr. President. Located off a main road in downtown in a corner restaurant, it felt like I had stepped into time portal once inside Phillipe's. The old tile floors, wooden seats and tables. Old glass counter tops reminds me of what you'd see at a New York deli. The workers behind the counter all wearing matching old fashioned blue outfits and big smiles ready to help and serve customers not often seen nowadays. Oldies but goodies on the speakers added that authentic feel of a classic diner/deli restaurant while we waited in their busy line. I had to do the French dipped sandwiches, that's what brought me here. The beef and pastrami is what I went with, respectively. They weren't large sandwiches but they were hearty. These are the kind of sandwiches I used to imagine cops eating while on a stakeout. The French roll paired with the delicious meat had me contemplating my next trip to LA. I got a couple photos that I won't be posting because I ordered the food to go and was a bite in and they just don't do the food and restaurant justice so I'll keep them to myself. See you sooner rather than later, Phillipe!
